I started off by doing some minor research. I knew how I wanted to start. I wanted my first few selections to be VQA's from the Niagara Region and I wanted them to be Red Wines. I suspected that tannin's were something that I wasn't going to fancy in wine, so I was looking to start where those weren't going to be a problem. After reading some general descriptions of wine I induced that Pino Noir was a great place to start. They are light to medium in body, low in tannin, and have tastes of red fruit like cherries and berries, which sounds enjoyable to me. Next, I went to the LCBO website to look up individual wines to try and pick one I would hate the least. After looking up many different bottles, I decided to start with 20 Bee's Baco Noir.
How it Went
The wine didn't taste as horrible as I thought it would. I still wouldn't say I enjoyed the taste but it wasn't as off putting as I remember. I did find the first few sips were very harsh on my stomach due to the wine's acidity. I read that you should smell your wine as you drink it, so I made sure that is what I did. I took a strong inhale every time that I took a drink which I think helped. Not only did it help give a richer taste but it's going to allow me to better differentiate the subtleties between wines in the future. In summary, I wouldn't say that I now enjoy wine but it looks like this journey is going to be more tolerable than I thought.
